U.S. President Donald Trump signed the Take It Down Act on Monday.
The law penalizes the online distribution of intimate images of a person without their consent—including those generated using artificial intelligence (AI).
The measure aims to combat the rise of deepfake pornography and protect, in particular, women and minors.

Trump held the official signing ceremony in the White House Rose Garden, accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, who supported the law from its early legislative stages.
The spread of fake pornographic content created with AI—especially deepfakes—has triggered a privacy and digital harassment crisis. Many victims are women whose faces have been digitally inserted into explicit images without their consent.
“With the rise of AI-generated images, countless women have been harassed with deepfakes and other explicit material distributed against their will,” said Trump. The law establishes prison sentences of up to three years for violators.
Melania Trump called the Take It Down Act “a victory that will help families protect their children from online exploitation.”

Championed by Republican Senator Ted Cruz and Democrat Amy Klobuchar, the Take It Down Act was passed in April with broad bipartisan support.
Its key provisions include:
-
A ban on the distribution or threat of distribution of intimate images without consent, including those created with AI.
-
A requirement for social media platforms and websites to remove reported content within 48 hours of a victim’s complaint.
-
Civil and criminal penalties for perpetrators.
The Bigger Picture
With the Take It Down Act, the U.S. positions itself as a global leader in regulating the malicious use of AI technologies for harassment and sexual exploitation.
The measure also represents a rare instance of bipartisan legislative cooperation between Republicans and Democrats.
